Pirouz Hanachi was elected as the new mayor of Tehran on Tuesday.
In a poll held by the members of the Islamic City Council of Tehran, Hanachi – the current deputy mayor for urban planning and architecture – claimed 11 votes, overtaking Amir-Abbas Akhoundi – the former roads and urban development minister – who collected 10.
Hanachi replaces Mohammad-Ali Afshani – recently retired – as the third mayor of the capital in the current term of the city council.
Hanachi, 54, is a graduate in architecture and restoration of urban constructions from the University of Tehran.
He has previously served in various positions in Tehran Municipality, Ministry of Roads and Urban Development and University of Tehran’s Faculty of Fine Arts.
Hanachi will now have to gain the approval of the Interior Ministry before officially taking charge of the capital’s municipality.
