Diabetes affects almost four million people in the UK, and 90 percent of all cases are type 2 diabetes.

The condition is caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin, express.co.uk reported.

But making some swaps to your daily routine could help to prevent diabetes, including diet and lifestyle changes.

Eating pumpkin seeds can lower your risk of insulin resistance, and avoid diabetes.

For every 100mg of magnesium you eat every day, your chances of diabetes are cut by 15 percent, he claimed.

Just two daily tablespoons of pumpkin seeds could be enough to lower your chances of developing the condition, added Mercola.

“Magnesium is a very important nutrient that many are deficient in,” said the physician.

“Lack of magnesium may raise your risk of insulin resistance, as it plays an important role in carbohydrate and glucose metabolism.

“Besides that, your body needs magnesium for more than 300 other biological and chemical processes, so make sure you're getting enough.

“Two tablespoons of pumpkin seeds will provide you with 74 mg of magnesium [about 25 percent of your recommended daily intake].

“Pumpkin seed butter can be made at home; simply blend whole, raw pumpkin seeds in a food processor until smooth.”

Seeds are some of the best dietary sources of magnesium, added Mercola.

Sunflower seeds are also a great choice of snack for diabetes patients. Just a quarter of a cup of sunflower seeds provides around 128mg of magnesium.

If you’re not a fan of seeds, other great sources of magnesium include dark, leafy green vegetables, nuts, and avocado.

Controlling blood sugar levels is crucial for diabetes patients, as they’re more at risk of some deadly complications.
