Controlling your blood pressure is crucial, as the condition raises the risk of some deadly complications, including heart attacks and heart disease.
But you could also be at risk of high blood pressure, and even sudden death, if you have sudden muscle tremors, it’s been revealed.
Muscle tremors could be a sign of extremely high blood pressure, warned medical website LiveStrong.
They can gradually get worse, and may be a sign of a hypertensive crisis – a medical emergency.
You should seek immediate medical help if you’re worried about the signs of a hypertensive crisis.
“Called the ‘silent killer’, hypertension rarely produces overt symptoms and can be deadly if left uncontrolled,” it said.
“When not controlled blood pressure levels can rise to the point that you start to experience physical symptoms.
“Some of the symptoms are nonspecific and may be overlooked as being a byproduct of some less serious condition or external cause.
“These symptoms can worsen acutely and in some cases result in sudden death.
“You should seek immediate assistance from a health care professional if you're experiencing muscle tremors or a sudden fall, trouble speaking or understanding speech, blurred or loss of vision, severe nosebleeds, coughing up blood, chest pains, numbness or tingling in your hands and feet, weakness or numbness of your face or one side of the body or a severe headache from an unknown cause.”
Any sudden increases in blood pressure could lead to a deadly hypertensive crisis, added the Mayo Clinic.
A reading of more than 180/120mmHg can damage blood vessels, and they may leak fluid or blood.
As a result, the heart may struggle to pump blood around the body efficiently.
If you think you’re having a hypertensive crisis, you should speak to a doctor straight away.
You could be at risk of the condition if you eat an unhealthy diet, are overweight, or don’t do much exercise.
Eating too much salt increases the risk of hypertension. Everyone should aim to eat less than 6g of salt in a single day.
The only way of knowing if you have high blood pressure is to get it checked.
All adults over 40 years old should check their blood pressure at least every five years.
