Construction of steam section of Shahroud-based power plant starts

Operations to build the steam section of a combined cycle power plant in the northern Iranian city of Shahroud began on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by Iran's Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian.

Known as Shahid Bastami, the power plant is expected to begin generating electricity by 2021, IRNA reported.

Once fully operational, the section will help increase significantly the electricity generation capacity of the combined cycle power plant, the city's governor, Mohammad-Karam Mohammadi, told IRNA on the sidelines of Ardakanian's trip to Shahroud.

He listed the advantages of the project as increasing the country's electricity production, making it possible to meet domestic demands during peak hours, helping decrease annual fuel consumption by 244 million cubic meters, reducing pollution and increasing the total efficiency of the entire power plant by 50 percent.

Karam Mohammadi said the section will be equipped with a 160-megawatt generator, a number of waste heat boilers, a steam turbine and dry cooling systems.

Shahid Bastami power plant includes a number of sections. The gas section of the plant has the capacity to generate 162 megawatts of electricity.
