Kerala Lifetime Achievement award goes to Iranian auteur Majidi

Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi who also headed the panel of jury at the 23rd International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) received the Lifetime Achievement award at the event.

He received the award from Kerala State Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The fete will conclude on December 13. Vijayan said at the inaugural ceremony of the event on December 7 that festivals were the main medium to promote secular ideas and a means to sustain humanity, reported.

Receiving the award, Majidi said, "More than any award and achievement, I would like to cherish the priceless warmth and kindness of the audience."

He noted, "IFFK is a proof of this propagation. Kerala didn't give up in the catastrophic setting of unexpected floods. This year's festival is a testament of the solidarity of cinema lovers."

Bengali filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta was the chief guest while actress-filmmaker Nandita Das was the guest of honor.

Following the ceremony, the opening film, 'Everybody Knows', directed by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, was screened.

Reports note, the seven-day festival will be featuring 190 films from 65 countries. Two Malayalam films 'Ea.Ma.Yau.' and 'Sudani from Nigeria' were nominated for the International section of the festival.

The theme of the festival this year is 'The Human Spirit: Films on Hope and Rebuilding'. Six films will be screened in this category.
