Zabihollah Poursheib put a fitting end to Iran’s campaign at the 2018 Karate 1 Series A in Shanghai, China, with a gold medal on the final day of the competitions.

On Sunday, the 32-year-old Iranian outpowered Igor Chikhmarev of Kazakhstan 2-0 in the men’s kumite -84kg final to take the country’s gold tally to two.

En route to the final, Poursheib had beaten opponents from the Chinese Taipei, Japan, Egypt and China before overcoming Russian Alexander Aliev in the semifinals.

Earlier in the competitions, Miad Yari – representing Iran in the men’s kumite -60kg contests – beat Turkey’s Eray Samdan in the final to claim Iran’s first gold.

Additionally, Amir Mehdizadeh, having suffered a third-round defeat against Brazilian Vinicius Figueira, defeated Alireza Shirsefat, in an all-Iranian third-place tie, 8-4 to collect a men’s kumite -67kg bronze.

More than 1,000 karatekas from 80 countries contested in the fourth round of the competitions on December 7-9.
