Iran’s two-man taekwondo team collected a gold and a bronze at the 2018 World Taekwondo Grand Slam in Wuxi, China, to end its campaign having won $75,000 in prize money. 

On Sunday, the final day of the tournament, Iran’s Sajjad Mardani won the gold medal of the men’s +80kg competitions and received a $70,000-cash prize, IRNA reported.

On the same day, his compatriot Armin Hadipour grabbed bronze to receive $5,000 in prize money.

En route to final, Mardani defeated Stephan Lambdin from the United States, Gil-Young Byeon from South Korea and China’s Zhaoxiang Song. In the final showdown, he managed to outmuscle Kyo-don In from South Korea 3-2.

In the third-place match of the men’s -58kg weight class, Hadipour edged past his South Korean rival 3-2 to receive bronze.

Earlier in the tournament, Hadipour had beaten a taekwondoka from Thailand and had conceded a defeat to South Korea’s Jun Jang in the semifinals.

The Iranian squad was coached by Ne’mat Khalifeh.

The 2018 World Taekwondo Grand Slam was the second edition of the World Taekwondo Grand Slam series which was held from December 12-16.
