Iran's Ministry of Agriculture has succeeded in supplying basic items and allocating low rate foreign currency for imports of goods.

"Despite sanctions against Iran and fluctuations in foreign currency rates, all the needs have been taken care of, and there is no shortage," said Deputy Agriculture Minister Yazdan Seif, according to Trend News Agency.

The official pointed to the allocation of rial equivalent of foreign currency for importing goods and necessary items and said that the country has become self-sufficient in wheat.

"The government policy is to support agriculture sector and increase food security in the country," he said.

"Positive food trade balance, sustainability of basic resources, self-sufficiency in primary products are the government's agricultural targets for 2025," he noted.

He cited supportive policies in agriculture sector and food sources as important steps to preserve basic sources.

Seif listed the important achievements of the ministry as the purchase of wheat, sugar beet and sugar at the guarantee of low price.

"Around 4,800 million tons of wheat have been purchased in 2013 whereas was 11.3 million tons in 2016, and around 9.5 million tons in 2018," he said.

Seif also said that Iran would reach self-sufficiency in sugar beet production in the next three years.
