Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani ordered swift investigation into claims of torture by a labor activist detained following strikes at an industrial complex in the southwestern country, the president’s adviser Hessameddin Ashna said on Tuesday, according to IRNA.
The country’s Judiciary head Sadeq Amoli Larijani has also called for an independent body to look into the allegations by Esmaeil Bakhshi, the spokesman for the workers’ union of the sugar cane plant.
On January 7, Larijani said a committee would be sent to the city of Shush, located in the oil-rich province of Khuzestan and home to the Haft Tapeh Sugarcane Industrial Complex.
Bakhshi was arrested on November 20 during demonstrations by the factory’s workers demanding unpaid wages.
He, who was released on December 12, has claimed that he was beaten and tortured in prison.
