Iran loses match against Japan in FIBA World Cup Asian qualifier
Japan's Joji Takeuchi goes up for a shot against Iran during the first quarter of their World Cup qualifier in the Iranian capital of Tehran on February 21, 2019.

Iran conceded an 89-97 defeat to Japan in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers on Thursday to see its chance of a place at the global extravaganza tied to a better performance in its next match against Aussies.

The Japanese team notched up its seventh Asian Qualifiers victory in the match held in Tehran, to come within a whisker of qualifying for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Makoto Hiejima shone brightest for Japan with 24 points, six assists, four rebounds and nine-of-13 field goal shooting, while Nick Fazekas added 26 points and eight boards.

Veteran big man Joji Takeuchi also stepped up, hitting a couple of triples en route to 17 points.

On the other end, the home team was paced by Mohammad Jamshidi's 33 points, but he had little support as Sajjad Mashayekhi was the only other Iranian player who broke into double-figures with 13 points.

Japan will next face Qatar in Doha on February 24, while Iran will end its Asian Qualifiers campaign against Australia on the same date.
