Interior Ministry: Parliamentary, Assembly of Experts elections will be held next year

Iran’s Interior Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday the parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections will be held simultaneously next year.

Seyyed Salman Samani said the preparation process has already started for holding the 11th round of the parliamentary elections and the first mid-term election of the Assembly of Experts which are scheduled to be held on February 21, 2020, IRNA reported.

There are currently 290 seats in the Iranian parliament, known as Majlis, elected by direct vote of people in nationwide election for four years.

In the last parliamentary elections held in 2016, reformists and moderate politicians allied with President Hassan Rouhani made big gains.

The Assembly of Experts is a body that elects and oversees the activities of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution. Members of the assembly are directly elected by people for an eight-year term.
