Iran's copper cathode production increases 13%

National Iranian Copper Industries Company (NICICO) produced over 223,000 tons of copper cathode in the 11 months from March 21, 2018-February 19, 2019 showing a 13-percent growth compared to the figure for the period a year earlier.

Production of anodes during the period reached more than 286,000 tons, which is 20 percent higher than the targeted 238,000 for the 11 months to February 19, wrote IRNA quoting a report by Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO).

According to the report, total copper production in the month to February 19 was 51,900 tons, which is 25 percent higher than the amount in the same period of 2018.

Managing director NICICO said in May 2018 that Iran plans to take a ranking among the top 10 copper cathode producers in the world by 2025.

In 2025, Iran's copper cathode production capacity will reach 655,000 tons, Mohammadreza Baniasadi said.

The official added that Iran's copper reserves stand at 21 million tons which is 1.3 percent of the global total.

He said that the NICICO's copper concentrate production capacity is currently over 1.2 million tons per year and, based on the 2025 development plan, this figure is set to reach 2.5 million tons.

At present, six copper mines are operating in the country.
