More Iranians interested in visiting museums

The number of people visiting Iranian museums will witness a 10 percent rise until the end of Iranian calendar year (March 21, 2019) and will reach almost 24 million, compared to the last year’s figure which stood at 21 million, Mohammad-Reza Kargar, Director General of the Museums and Mobile Historical Assets said.

Kargar said during the past five years, people’s taste for entertainment has changed and going to concerts, theaters, galleries and museums has become prevalent not only among the young generation but also among families as a whole, IRNA reported.

There 660 museums across the country. They hosted 21 million visitors last year (ended March 21, 2018), he noted.

Not all Iranian museums belong to Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization and almost 330 museums belong to other organizations including municipalities and Mostazafan Foundation.

Capital Tehran and Khorasan Razavi, each, home to 150 and 90 museums respectively, accommodate the highest number of museums, he said.

“The number of the museums will increase to 1,000 by the end of 12th administration.” he said.

In 2018, The National Museum of Iran hosted a collection of artworks on loan from the Louvre in Paris for a four-month period. The exhibition titled ‘Louvre in Tehran’, as the first large-scale show by a Western museum in Iran's history, registered 50,000 visitors.
