Seyyedeh Fatemeh Sima Shadkam and Sahand Nouri of Iran opened the account for the country at the 2019 Asian Youth Athletics Championships with two bronze medals on the first day of the competitions in Hong Kong.
On Friday, representing Iran in the women’s 2000m steeplechase contests, Shadkam clocked 7:32.53 minutes in the final to finish third, following Japan’s Yuzuki Murakami (7:06.53) and Vassilissa Fakhrutdinova (7:22.88) of Kazakhstan, who won the gold and silver respectively.
Additionally, Nouri, participating in the men’s hammer throw competitions, had to settle for a third-spot finish with a best throw of 65.85m.
Indian Vipin Kumar registered the best throw of the afternoon with 69.63m to grab the gold with Fan Yanfeng of China taking the silver with 66.64m
The third edition of the championships takes place at Hong Kong’s Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground on March 15-17.
