Nowruz is a symbol of regeneracy and life, Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Vladimir Norov said.
He made the remarks in a ceremony held by his organization in cooperation with China's friendship group with foreign countries to commemorate the International Nowruz Day, IRNA reported.
The official said that promotion of peace and unity and preserving the traditions and cultural diversity are among the special characteristics of Nowruz.
In the meantime, the Iranian Ambassador to China Mohammad Keshavarz-Zadeh for his part stressed the importance of cherishing such social traditions as Nowruz which promote peace in the world.
Nowruz has now become a source of unity and brotherhood among those countries which share this culture, he added.
Nowruz (meaning new day in Persian) marks the first day of spring.
The Persian New Year is celebrated across the world by various countries, particularly Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, countries falling within the Former Yugoslavia, Republic of Macedonia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan.
It was registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009 by the UN.
