Pakistan, EU discuss Iran

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi says during his meeting with European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini discussed Iran.

Addressing a joint press briefing after holding a meeting with EU policy chief in Islamabad on Monday, the minister said Iran being neighbor is very important for Pakistan.

“We also discussed Iran and as you know the Europeans and European Union have somewhat a different perspective from the US on Iran so we discussed the Iranian situation and how important Iran is for Pakistan being our neighbor,” he said.

He said trade between Pakistan and the European Union has doubled after grant of GSP Plus status to Pakistan in 2013, IRNA reported.

He said the present government is keen to enhance exports to Europe and fix the trade deficit issue, besides creating more jobs for Pakistanis through trade with Europe.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said he also apprised the EU delegation about the steps taken by Pakistan to fulfill FATF commitments as well as the steps taken to cleanse the tribal belt.

The minister expressing his views said that rising trend of Islamophobia is great concern for everyone.

He said that European Union and Pakistan have agreed to strategic partnership in the fields of trade, investment and energy for durable development.

On Afghanistan, he said the European Union delegation shared Pakistan's concern for peace and stability in that country. He said that there is no military solution to the issue of Afghanistan. He said the EU delegation appreciated Pakistan's role in the Afghan reconciliation process.

Federica Mogherini during the briefing said that the EU values the role of Pakistan in the Afghan peace process.
