'Iran plays a role in fighting active terrorist groups in the region, and has inflicted big blows to them,' Konstantin Sivkov, the first rank captain and president of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems in Moscow told Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
Saying that the US is trying to make the Middle East unrest volatile, the Russian expert noted that Washington is backing some countries such as Saudi Arabia to set the stage for its own presence, IRNA reported.
Referring to the Yemen war as an instance of US measures for making the region instable, Sivkov said that the Saudi-led coalition have been attacking Yemen for four years.
Over the recent years, Middle East has been the scene of bloody clashes in which the US has had directly played a role.
Iran and Russia, however, confronted the moves and the result of the cooperation was the restoration of stability in Syria, he noted.
When the Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group attacked Iraq, he said, Iran and Russia with coordination of Iraq and Syria set up an intelligence center in Baghdad that contributed to fighting terrorism.
The two countries, also in Syria, played influential roles in eradication of terrorist groups that were supported by some Western countries with collaboration of their regional allies, the Russian expert added.
