Prominent Italian ex-referee to watch Persepolis vs Esteghlal derby

Italian former football referee Pierluigi Collina is scheduled to be in Iran on Saturday to watch Persepolis vs Esteghlal derby.

During the recent FIFA committee meeting in Zürich, Football Federation President of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) Mehdi Taj invited Collina to have a trip to Iran to watch the game and also to review facilities and the infrastructures available for Video Assistant Referee (VAR), according to IRNA.

Participating in Azadi Stadium to watch derby, holding talks with Iranian football federation officials, reviewing VAR infrastructures are among Collina’s plans during his stay in Tehran.

Collina was born in Bologna and attended the University of Bologna, graduating with a degree in economics in 1984.
During his teenage years, he played as a central defender for a local team, but was persuaded in 1977 to take a referee's course, where it was discovered that he had a particular aptitude for the job.

Within three years he was officiating at the highest level of regional matches, while also completing his compulsory military service. In 1988, he progressed more rapidly than normal to the national third division, Serie C1 and Serie C2.

After three seasons, he was promoted to officiating Serie B and Serie A matches.

Earlier, Taj said Esteghlal and Perspolis teams are the symbol of Iran's strength in Asia.

Esteghlal Football Club previously known as Taj Football Club is an Iranian professional football club based in Tehran and founded on 26 September 1945.

Persepolis Football Club, is a Persian Gulf Pro League professional football club based in Tehran, Iran. Persepolis F.C. was founded in 1963 by Ali Abdo and has been in the first division of Iranian football since 1968.
