Iranian actor Jamshid Mashayekhi passes away

Jamshid Mashayekhi, one of “top five actors of Iranian cinema” who starred in acclaimed movies such as ‘Kamalolmolk’ and ‘Chrysanthemums’, died at Tehran’s Erfan Hospital on Tuesday. He was 85.

The highly-revered actor died due to heart arrest at a hospital in Tehran.

Born in 1934, Mashayekhi began his career as a theater actor and then starred in a host of movies and TV series before and after the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

He had been awarded the best actor in the Fajr Film Festival of Iran and many other international events several times.

Many critics believe that Mashayekhi has gone down in history by playing roles in outstanding movies and TV series such as “Prince Ihtijab”, “Kamalolmolk”, “Hezardastan” and “Chrysanthemums”.

Mashayekhi was one of golden generation of actors of pre-revolutionary Iran and veteran actor Parviz Parastui once called him one of top five actors of Iranian cinema along with Mohammad-Ali Keshavarz, Ali Nasirian, Davud Rashidi, and Ezzatollah Entezami.

The popular actor will be laid to rest in Tehran on April 6.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi have in separate messages expressed condolences on the passing away of Mashayekhi.
