This will be one of the tools enabling the European Union to meet its climate goals and seek to become climate-neutral by 2050, neweurope.eu wrote.
“The public demands and expects action on the environmental challenges we face, and the LIFE program (French: L’Instrument Financier pour l’Environnement which is the European Union’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action) helps us to take that much-needed action,” EU Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella said welcoming the vote.
“It plays a crucial role in identifying how best to transform our economies to meet the needs of the 21st Century and to tackle problems such as nature degradation, air and water pollution and waste creation and disposal,” he added.
Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete added: “As Europe goes climate neutral, this program will play a key role in unlocking the necessary investments in climate action and sustainable energy across Europe. With an increased focus on clean energy, energy efficiency and climate change mitigation, the new LIFE program will contribute to improve the daily lives of Europeans.”
According to the European Commission, in order to provide a better quality of life for Europeans and invest in a more sustainable future, the Juncker Commission is making an unprecedented effort to protect the environment and climate, notably by increasing the LIFE program funding and integrating climate action into all major EU spending program. This will help Europe to deliver on its commitments under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, addressing some of the most important challenges of this century.
The LIFE program is among the EU funding programs for which the Commission has proposed the largest proportional increase for the period 2021-2027. Raising the level of ambition for climate financing, the Commission has also proposed that at least 25 percent of EU expenditure across all EU programs should contribute to climate objectives.
