Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday said Iran is ready to further expand relations with Turkmenistan, stressing that commonalities between the two neighbors are beyond their common border.

He made the remarks in a meeting with his Turkmen counterpart Raşit Meredow in Ashgabat on Monday.

Heading a high-ranking economic delegation, Zarif arrived in Ashgabat on Sunday for a series of talks with senior Turkmen officials, according to Foreign Ministry’s official website.

Both officials discussed a range of issues including international and regional cooperation, especially on Afghanistan, joint economic commissions, Turkmen president’s visit to Iran, and cooperation on transit, railway, energy, prisoners' affairs, and the Caspian Sea.

Earlier in the day, the Iranian foreign minister also held a separate meeting with Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.

Iran and Turkmenistan have accelerated efforts in recent years to forge closer partnership in various political and economic fields.

In March 2018, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani paid an official visit to Ashgabat at the invitation of Berdimuhamedow, during which the two sides signed a number of agreements in various fields.

Iran and Turkmenistan share a border of more than 1,000 kilometers that includes the Caspian Sea coastline. The two countries have been enjoying good relations since Turkmenistan's independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991.
