Judiciary: Iranian woman sentenced to 10 years over spying for Britain

Iran’s Judiciary sentenced an Iranian woman to 10 years in prison for spying for Britain, according to Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaeili.

Esmaeili said on Monday that the convict was in charge of the ‘Iran Desk’ at the British Council, according to IRNA.

He said the convict, who was arrested by Iranian intelligence and security organizations, had been cooperating with the British intelligence service.

She was tasked with designing, managing and planning cultural infiltration projects in Iran, Esmaeili said.

The spokesman added that the convict has confessed that she had received trainings from the UK secret service and cooperated with the cultural council of the UK with the aim of carrying out cultural projects in Iran.

He did not name her, but said she was a student in Britain before being recruited by the British Council.

Britain’s Foreign Office said it was “very concerned” at reports on Monday that Iran had sentenced an Iranian woman to 10 years in prison for spying for Britain.
