President accepts education minister’s resignation

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani accepted the resignation of Minister of Education Seyyed Mohammad Bathaei, who is leaving the office to run for a seat in Parliament.

The office of the Iranian administration’s spokesperson announced on Thursday that Bathaei has resigned from the cabinet to run for Parliament, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The president has accepted the resignation before the start of registration of parliamentary candidates, the office said, adding that the new caretaker of the Education Ministry will be assigned by the president on Saturday.

Iran will hold parliamentary elections in February 2020.

The Parliament gave a vote of confidence to Bathaei as the minister of education in August 2017.

Bathaei was in the initial list of nominees for cabinet posts that Rouhani had proposed to Parliament days after being sworn in as the president for a second term.
