A five-set thriller on Friday saw Iran concede first defeat at the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League at the hands of Brazil in Tokyo, Japan.
The Asian powerhouse came short of a fourth consecutive victory in the competition, falling down to the South American giant 25-23, 16-25, 25-21, 31-33, 10-15 in the Week 2 opener.
Ricardo Lucarelli Souza topped the scoring for Brazil with 20 points, followed by Yoandy Leal Hidalgo who scored 16.
Seyyed Mohammad Mousavi and Amir Ghafour chipped in 19 and 16 points for Iran, respectively.
The victory put Brazil on top of the table with four victories with France – which also made it four out of four with a 3-1 (28-26, 25-23, 24-26, 25-20) victory over Poland in Ningbo, China – and Iran in the second and third places.
Iran will next face Argentina – which was well-beaten by Japan in straight sets (25-16, 25-16, 33-31) on Friday – on Saturday, before wrapping up the second week of the league against Japan on Sunday.
