Trump’s policies highlight his lack of intelligence, strategic thinking: Analyst

US President Donald Trump’s strategy in dealing with other nations underscores his lack of intelligence and strategic thinking, and “believes running the office of the presidency is akin to a reality show,” a political analyst in Maryland says.

“It’s getting to the point where most world leaders will just come out and say openly that they’ll wait for the next US president before they take this one seriously,” said Myles Hoenig, who ran for Congress in 2016 as a Green Party candidate, Presstv Reported.

“There is open contempt for Trump the person,” Hoenig said in an interview with Press TV on Thursday. “Not even [former US President Richard] Nixon received such derision from people in similar roles,” Hoenig said in an interview with Press TV on Thursday.

The recent immigration deal with Mexico and “so many other such issues require intelligence, strategic thinking, and vision, something the US is not experiencing at this time,” he added.

Trump has made curbing illegal immigration to the US a priority issue and has blamed Mexico for the problem. Asylum is at the core of Trump’s concerns because a large proportion of the people apprehended at the US-Mexican border say they are fleeing violence and repression.

In January, the Trump administration began sending thousands of migrants back to Mexico to wait there instead for their asylum cases, a process that can take months or years to resolve due to backlogs in the system.

Trump has threatened tariffs on Mexican goods unless it curbs illegal immigration across its border with the US.

On Friday, the tariffs were called off, after the United States and Mexico announced an agreement on immigration. But Trump renewed the threat of tariffs on Monday, saying they would be reimposed if Mexico’s Congress did not approve the immigration deal.

The agreement between the US and Mexico over immigration, to avoid a tariff war “shows that President Trump believes that running the office of the presidency is akin to a reality show, with smoke and mirrors, hidden surprises, and something behind door #3,” Hoenig said.
