UCCA exhibition holds largest showcase of Picasso’s early works in China

A new exhibition at Beijing’s Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) is bringing the largest showcase of the Spanish artist’s works to China.

The exhibition, ‘Picasso – Birth of a Genius,’ includes 103 works from the Musee National Picasso, Paris, collection that trace the artist’s development from childhood to middle age. According to Emilia Philippot, exhibition curator and head of collections at the Paris museum, the 34 paintings, 14 sculptures and 55 works on paper at the exhibition make up the largest and most significant showcase of the artist’s work ever in China, globaltimes.cn reported.

“The exhibition marks the realization of a dream we have held since our opening in 2007,” said Phillip Tinari, director of the UCCA.

“To present not only recent developments in contemporary art but to examine the underpinnings of contemporary art by showing modern masters. The story of Picasso is relevant to our audience in China, as individuals here continue to answer the challenges of creativity, originality and innovation.”
