Iran was pitted in Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup Joint-Qualifiers alongside Iraq, Bahrain, Hong Kong and Cambodia.

The draw of the second round of the Asian qualifiers was held at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, capital city of Malaysia, on Wednesday, where 40 Asian teams were drawn in eight groups.

Iran’s quest for a third consecutive appearance at the World Cup Finals will start with an away fixture at Hong Kong on September 10.

Marc Wilmots’s men, the highest-ranked Asian team in FIFA ranking, will finish their campaign with a home encounter against Iraq on June 9, 2020.

Meanwhile, Japan, Asia's most successful team in the 2018 World Cup where it was beaten by Belgium in the last-16 round, was drawn in Group F with Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Myanmar and Mongolia.

South Korea, which has appeared in every edition of the World Cup Finals since 1986, will have Lebanon, DPR Korea, Turkmenistan and Sri Lanka in Group H of the Asian Qualifiers.

Australia will go up against Jordan, Chinese Taipei, Kuwait and Nepal in Group B with Saudi Arabia taking on Uzbekistan, Palestine, Yemen and Singapore in Group D.

The eight group winners as well as the four best runners-up will qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2023 to be held in China as well as progress to the third and final round of the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers.

The next best 24 teams from the second round of the joint-qualifiers will take part in a separate competition to claim the 12 remaining slots in the 24-team 2023 Asian Cup.
