Iran’s Mojtaba Abedini won an individual saber bronze at the 2019 World Fencing Championships in Budapest, capital city of Hungary – the country’s first-ever medal at the competitions.

On Thursday, the 34-year-old Iranian suffered a 15-8 defeat against the host’s fencer Andras Szatmari to settle for a joint-third-spot finish alongside Italian Luca Curatoli, who was beaten by Oh Sang-uk of South Korea in the other last-four bout.

Oh went on to beat Szatmari in the final and snatched the gold medal.

Having started on July 15, the world championships will finish on July 23 at Budapest’s SYMA Sports and Conference Centre.
