Iranian karatekas took the competitions by storm on the second day of the 2019 AKF Senior Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, collecting nine medals – including three kumite golds.
On Saturday, Taravat Khaksar outpowered the host’s Sevinch Rakhimova 6-0 in the women’s -55kg final for Iran’s first gold in the championship.
Zabihollah Poursheib took the country’s gold count to two after he defeated Jordan’s Mahmoud Sajan 1-0 in the final of the men’s -84kg weight class.
Hamideh Abbasali – representing Iran in the women’s +68kg category – wrapped up the night for the country in style with a 4-2 final triumph over Sofya Berultseva of Kazakhstan.
Meanwhile, Rozita Alipour came short of one last push for the women’s -61kg gold and was beaten by China’s Xiaoyan Yin in the final.
In the women’s team kata, Iran – comprising Elnaz Taqipour, Shadi Ja’farizadeh and Najmeh Qazizadeh – also had to settle for a silver medal after Ja’farizadeh suffered a last-minute injury before the final contest.
Sadeqi claimed her second medal of the night with a third-spot finish in the women’s individual kata.
Additionally, Bahman Asgari (-75kg) and Sajjad Ganjzadeh (+84kg) added two men’s kumite bronzes to Iran’s account while in the men’s team kata, the three-man team of Abolfazl Shahrjerdi, Milad Farazmehr and Ali Zand also stood third.
A total of 340 contestants represent 33 countries in the 16th edition of the Asian Championship.
