Two Iranian free style wrestlers representing the country in the 2019 edition of Grand Prix Moscow Alrosa Cup, managed to grab a silver and a bronze at the end of the competitions.
The tournament was held in Moscow on November 29-30, according to IRNA.
Ahmad Bazri, 86kg, was the Iranian wrestler who won the silver medal, and Mohammad-Hossein Mohammadian received the bronze medal of his weight class (97kg).
In the first round of the 97kg, Mohammadian failed to outmuscle his Azerbaijani rival Sharif Sharifov, losing the bout 3-4. He, then, fought for the bronze medal in the third-place playoff against Russia’s Anzor Urishev, a match which ended 11-0 in his favor.
Bazri outpowered a wrestler from Moldova 5-2 in the first round of the 86kg weight category, and then notched up a victory against Uzbekistan’s Rashid Kurbanov 6-2 to go through to the final bout. The final showdown, however, did not end in his favor as he conceded a 1-3 defeat to Russia’s Magomed Eldarovitch Ramazanov to settle for a silver.
The competition was held in Olympics weight categories of both freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines at Moscow’s Luzhniki Sports Complex.
All the gold medals of the event, both in freestyle and Greco-Roman, went to Russian wrestlers except for the one for the 65kg weight class of the freestyle contests which was collected by Azerbaijan’s Haji Aliyev.
