Ministry: Over 6.5 million foreign tourists visited Iran in eight months

A total number of 6.7 million foreign travelers, with visas, visited Iran in the first eight months of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2019), said the head of Iran’s Foreign Ministry’s Visa and Passport Department.

Mojtaba Karimi made the statement during the opening ceremony of the National Conference of Ecotourism, Culture and Tourism Development in Iran’s northeastern city of Mashhad on December 4.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has placed the facilitation of the process of issuing visas on its agenda, IRNA reported.

To this end, Iran is negotiating with several countries to have no-visa policies reciprocally, Karimi added.

Facilitating the issuance of visas increased the number of international tourists visiting Iran from three million in the year ending March 19, 2015 to 7.73 million in the year ending March 20, 2018.

It has been almost three years since Iran started issuing electronic visas for tourists traveling to the country, in a bid to facilitate their journeys.

There is no difference between electronic and normal visas in terms of duration or validity. It is just that an electronic visa does not appear on a passport, so that foreigners do not have to explain to authorities why they have visited Iran.

The secretary general of the two-day conference said, “The conference seeks to create a tourism knowledge network by engaging with university professors, scholars and experts, and enthusiasts in tourism and ecology.”
