Iran opened its campaign at the 2020 Asian Handball Championship in emphatic fashion, overcoming New Zealand 53-21.
Iran took the first half by a 22-11 scoreline.
The victory at Kuwait City’s Shaikh Saad Al-Abdallah Sports Hall on Friday took Iran top of Group A, with Bahrain – which had beaten New Zealand 45-16 on the preceding night – in second spot.
Iran takes on Bahrain today to decide the winner of the three-team group.
Thirteen sides are drawn into four groups with the top two of each group heading into the last-eight group phaze.
The final is set to be played on January 27.
All four semifinalists will qualify for the 2021 World Men’s Handball Championship in Egypt, starting next January.
