Mohsen Esmaeili added that the names of Amir Ali and Fatemeh, which have been selected for 28,057 boys and 37,927 girls respectively during the period, were among the most popular names in Iran.
Ali is the name of the first Imam of Shia Muslims and Fatemeh is the name of the distinguished daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
He said Muhammad, Ali, Hossein, Amir Hossein, Mohammad Taha, Abolfazl, Amir Mohammad, Amir Abbas and Mohammad Mehdi were among the other popular names of boys during the period.
The official referred to Zahra, Nazanin Zahra, Yasna, Zeynab, Reyhaneh, Fatemeh Zahra, Raha, Baran and Sana as the most common names selected for girls.
Esmaeil said naming committees, affiliated to NOCR, are active in all provinces, calling on parents who want to select special names for their babies to refer to the committee.
