Bus crash leaves 4 dead, 40 injured in Germany

A bus crash in Germany has claimed at least four lives and left 40 injured, officials say.

The fatal crash occurred on Tuesday at 0930 GMT after a car smashed into the bus near the town of Bad Hersfeld, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of Frankfurt, police spokesman, Thomas Rodemer, said.

The spokesman noted that 18 of the injured passengers are in critical conditions, adding, "We can't say at this stage whether anyone is trapped under the bus."

The bus, which was carrying a group of senior citizens, had reportedly departed from the southwestern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.  It was driving on a highway in western Hesse state when the accident happened.

The driver of the car that hit the bus had apparently lost control and skidded into the bus.

Rodemer also said the coach careened through a crash barrier, veered off the road, and flipped over near 50 meters (165 feet) down the embankment.

The highway was closed, and five rescue helicopters were sent to the crash site.
