Iran ranks first in Mideast power generation

Iran ranks first in the Middle East for generating more than 71,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity, says the managing director of Iran Power Generation and Transmission Company (TAVANIR).

"Power plants have been installed with a total capacity of 71,700 MW, which make Iran the top electricity generator in the Middle East," Mehr News Agency quoted Homayoun Haeri as saying on Monday.

Iran is the largest exporter and importer of electricity in the Middle East, and has signed electricity swap deals with many regional countries.

Earlier, Haeri said average per capita electricity generation in Asia is 190 watts and Iran’s electricity industry ranks 14th in the world.

The Iranian official also pointed out that 99 percent of the equipment required for power generation, transfer and distribution is domestically designed and produced.

Iran is currently exchanging electricity with Armenia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Nakhichivan, Iraq and Afghanistan.
