Astara is a city in the northern province of Gilan. It lies on the border with Azerbaijan Republic and along Caspian Sea shores. It is a relatively important border trade center linking Iran and the Caucasus. The majority of the people in Astara speak in Taleshi — an offshoot of Azeri-Turkic dialect. Astara has a blend of Gilan and Azarbaijan cultures.
