Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the head of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Kitack Lim, met on Saturday to discuss ways of further cooperation between Iran and the UN agency.

Earlier in the day, the South Korean secretary general of IMO had praised Iran’s efforts in confronting Somali pirates, guaranteeing security of the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.

“Iran has made significant progress in shipping and maritime industry and has contributed to a more secure maritime environment by confronting pirates,” said Lim at a forum held on World Maritime Day in Tehran.

He also expressed appreciation for Iran’s cooperation with the investigation committee of the Sanchi incident.

The Panama-flagged tanker, Sanchi, and a Chinese vessel, Crystal, collided in January in the East China Sea as thirty Iranian and two Bangladeshi sailors were killed in the accident.

Lim announced that Iran will be the host of IMO international meetings in 2021.
