Iran’s Moradi suffers major injury blow, could miss Tokyo 2020
Sports Desk

Iran’s weightlifting sensation Sohrab Moradi will be ruled out for, probably, an estimated nine-month period after suffering a slipped herniated disc.

The 30-year-old will have to undergo a surgery and will miss the 4th International Fajr Cup – held annually to commemorate the victory of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution – in Tehran next month (March 1-5) as well as the Asian Weightlifting Championships in the Chinese city of Ningbo – starting on April 20.

The 2016 Rio Games gold medalist’s participation in the Tokyo Olympic Games could also be jeopardized as both upcoming competitions are among the qualification tournaments for the Games.

Moradi – a triple world-record holder in the men’s 96kg weight class – will have to take part in at least six qualification tournaments to secure a place in Tokyo Games.
