Iranian photographers among winners of World Press Photo 2019
Two Iranian photographers Forough Alaei and Enayat Asadi won two prizes in World Press Photo 2019.

A photo of a two-year-old girl crying near the US-Mexico border – a child who became an iconic face of President Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy last year – taken by John Moore won the World Press Photo of the Year award and the prize of 10,000 euros.

Iranian photographer Alaei won the First Prize of Sports’ Stories for a photo which shows women following the Asian Champions League soccer match between Iranian club Persepolis and Japan’s Kashima Antlers in Tehran on November 10, 2018, worldpressphoto.org reported.

Born in 1989, Alaei started photography in 2015 and become a photojournalist. In a short time, she became fond of documentary photography and filmmaking.

Based on her background, as well as research interests, she explores issues related to humanity and social matters with a special focus on women’s right.

In the section of Contemporary Issues’ Singles, another Iranian photographer Asadi won the Third Prize with a photo of an Afghan refugee comforting his companion as they are waiting for transport at Afghanistan's border with Iran, on July 27, 2018.

Born in 1981, he graduated in electrical engineering, but in 2009 started working as a photographer, having taught himself. In 2011, he decided to travel to Afghanistan to cover the events of the war in the South-Central Asian country.

His work concentrates on social problems, violations of human rights, poverty, injustice and social discrimination. In 2017, following the aftermath of the war in Afghanistan, Asadi began to photograph Afghan immigrants and cover issues of illegal immigrants.

Asadi won numerous awards, including coming second place in the Istanbul Photo Awards in 'Story News' in 2017 and being a finalist of the Philip Jones Griffiths Foundation in 2018.

All of the nominated pictures will be included in a year-long exhibition that will tour around the world and be seen by an estimated four million people.
