Iran among top 20 scientific nations
Iran ranked fourth in terms of science production among top 20 countries in 2014, said Mohammad Javad Dehqani, the head of Islamic World Science Citation Center (ISC).

He added both quantity and quality have been taken into account in considering the rankings of countries.

"Iran ranked 18th and 15th in the world in terms of the number of scientific papers in 2013 and 2015. Sweden ranked 17th in 2013 with only 40 more papers than Iran," he said.

Dehqani said the world's science production has been growing at a slow pace since 2012.

"About 100,000 more scientific papers were produced in 2012 compared to the figure for 2011. Only 92,000 more scientific papers were produced in 2013 compared with 2012. In the year 2014, the growth even declined further such that only 21,000 more papers were produced in 2014 compared to the previous year," he said.

Dehqani said scientific production in 2015 has shown a growth and the difference between the number of scientific papers of 2014 and 2015 is estimated at 500,000.

"Iran's scientific production, which showed 4.4 percent growth in 2014 compared with the figure for the previous year, ranks behind Russia, India and China with 14.5 percent, 10.26 percent and 6.85 percent of growth rates respectively," he said.

He said the 12 top countries in science production including the US, the UK, France, the Netherlands and Japan had negative growth rate during the same period.

"Iran produced 42,993 papers in 2014," Dehqani said, adding Iran's rate of science production has increased by fivefold over the past 10 years.

Dehqani, however, said the quality of scientific papers and converting science into wealth are much more important than the number of papers.
