Italian PM, Mogherini due in Tehran
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will visit Iran this week in a bid to bolster ties with the Islamic Republic, Iran's Foreign Ministry said.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaberi-Ansari said Italian prime minister will arrive in Tehran on Tuesday to discuss bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest with top Iranian officials.

Jaberi-Ansari said the EU foreign policy chief along with seven European commissioners will start the visit to Iran on April 16, IRNA reported.

Mogherini and her accompanying delegation will have important meetings with several political and trade officials in Tehran.

The EU was Iran’s biggest trade partner until sanctions took effect in 2012 over Iran’s nuclear program. Senior business and government officials have said there is huge interest from European companies to engage or in some cases to resume broad commercial ties.

Mogherini, who traveled to Iran last summer days after the nuclear deal was reached, said the visit will open the way for a “major European Union investment in our bilateral relations”.

Renzi's visit to Iran takes place three months after the Iranian president visited Europe to rebuild ties as years of economic sanctions ended.

The two sides signed business deals worth billions of dollars during Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's visit in January, and Renzi said then that they were only the beginning of future cooperation.

Italian companies including shipbuilder Fincantieri, Ansaldo Energia and state railways Ferrovie dello Stato have all signed deals with various Iranian companies. Fashion house Roberto Cavalli and leather firm Piquadro have opened shops in the capital Tehran.
