Iran overcame Argentina in a five-set thriller (25-23, 15-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-10) at 2017 FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship to seal the place in fifth-place playoff.

On Saturday, Iran and Argentina squared off in the Czech city of Brno in what turned out to be a rematch of their Pool C encounter, earlier in the competition, which saw the Asian side win 3-2.

Iran came into this on the back of a heart breaking defeat against Poland on the final day of Pool E fixtures which denied Iran a semifinal spot as the Asians finished third in the group next to Poland and Cuba.

The Asian powerhouse started brightly and took a massive first set by 25-23 score line.

The Argentines bounced back to win the second and third sets 25-15 and 25-18.

However Iran’s team contributed by Amir-Hossein Esfandiar’s magnificent performance took the fourth set 25-22 to push it into the fifth set which was Iranian’s sixth consecutive tie-break in the competition.

Iran kept the momentum in the fifth set and won it 15-10 to take the game 3-2.

Esfandiar was the winning side’s most prolific player with 14 points, while Argentina’s Juan Horacio Bucciarelli was the best scorer of the match with 24 points.
