Ja’farzadeh: Patients shouldn’t worry about anesthesia

Today, anesthesia is more secure in Iran, said member of Presiding Board of Iranian Society of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Afshin Ja’farzadeh told Iran Daily that people should not worry about events after anesthesia in operating room.

Pointing to 4,000 anesthesiologists in Iran, he said currently there is no shortage of anesthesiologists and anesthesia equipment and instruments across the country.

He noted that available anesthetics are in accordance with international standards.

Although numerous measures have been taken in line of producing anesthesia drugs and indigenizing its technology, he said, the majority of anesthetics including inhaled and venous anesthetics are imported.

The Iranian Society of Anesthesiology maintains tight supervision on anesthetics, he added.

Given the new anesthetics, knowledge of anesthesiologists and special cares, he said, medical side effects resulting from anesthesia is on a global standard level — one death from every 50,000 anesthesia cases.

According to him, the side effects of anesthetics are usually allergic reactions, he said.

He recommended patients to undergo a check-up by anesthesiologists before surgery. This will play a great role in reducing the side effects of anesthesia and pain management after surgery, he added.

Anesthesiologists have important roles both in the operating room and intensive care unit (ICU) for recovery after surgery, he said.

Ja’farzadeh noted that the Thirteenth International Congress of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Management will be held at Tehran’s Milad Tower International Conference Center during December 6-8.

Over 2,000 participants will take part in the upcoming congress, he added. Apart from the latest scientific achievements in anesthesia, issues such as medical ethics and legal issues will be discussed during the three-day event, he said.

Domestic and foreign specialists and anesthesiologists from France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland will attend the congress, he noted.

He added 250 articles have been submitted to the congress, of which 80 will be presented in the form of lecture.

“We intend to reach the highest scientific level in anesthesiology across the region within five years.”

He also said anesthesiology is considered a new field in Iran compared to other medical fields.
