Khaf-Herat railroad to be operational soon
The connection of Iran-Afghanistan railway networks would be completed soon, said the deputy head of Islamic Republic of Iran Railways.

According to Mehr News Agency, Maziar Yazdani further said, "Iran-Afghanistan railway networks via Khaf-Herat railroad will be completed in the next few months."

Khaf-Herat Railroad (139 kilometers long) is a part of Iran-Afghanistan rail corridor and has reportedly made a physical progress of 89 percent. The project started in the fiscal year of 2007-2008.

The official added that the construction of a railway project linking the southeastern Iranian city of Khorramshahr to Basra Province in southern Iraq would begin this year.

The railway extends for 47 kilometers, of which Iran has already constructed 12km from Khorramshahr to the Iran-Iraq border.

This leaves Iraq with the construction of 35 kilometers of the track.

Iran's railway system is linked to railways of Central Asia, China and Russia and with the completion of the 35-kilometer stretch of Shalamcheh-Basra railway, Iraq will be able to transfer goods and passengers to Russia and China.
