Iranian helmer Majidi picked to head Kerala jury
Renowned Iranian auteur, best known for his 1998 Oscar-nominated film 'Children of Heaven', Majid Majidi, will preside over the panel of jury at this year's International Film Festival of Kerala, in India.

Majidi will be heading the panel of jury for the international competition section, IRNA wrote.

Other members of the panel at IFFK this year are Tamil filmmaker Vetrimaaran, Marathi director Umesh Kulkarni, and Filipino director Adolfo Alix Jr.

Vetrimaaran's 'Vada Chennai', Kulkarni's 'Highway', and Alix's 'Dark is the Night' will also be screened at the festival under the category Jury Films.

The festival will also screen his feature 'Muhammad: The Messenger of God', which was released in 2015 and is about the childhood of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and is also the biggest budget production in Iranian cinema.

The film met with criticism from Arab countries which called for its ban. Majidi said in an interview that the ban was called for by Saudi authorities and religious scholars who had not watched the film.

He noted that he had asked religious scholars to see the film and was ready to act on their observations. Majidi said that he had spent seven years working on the film, consulting Sunni and Shia scholars and researching in every Muslim country, obtaining permissions.

His other works are 'The Song of Sparrows' (2008), 'The Color of Paradise' (1999) and 'Baran' (2001).

'The Dark Room' by Rouhollah Hejazi, 'The Graveless' by Mostafa Sayyari and 'Tale of The Sea' by Bahman Farmanara are also slated to go on screen in the festival's international competition section.

The festival is scheduled to run from December 7-13.
