Ashuradeh Island, natural reserve on northern coastline
Ashuradeh is the only Iranian island in the Caspian Sea.

The northern Iranian coastline is characterized with its unique, pristine nature and a combination of sea and forest.

Forty kilometers west of Gorgan, capital of Golestan Province, the island is a part of Miankaleh Peninsula. The total area of the island used to be 1200 hectares, 800 hectares of which has submerged into Caspian Sea, wrote.

It is situated three kilometers from the coast of Bandar Turkmen and is bound to Caspian Sea in the north, Chopoq Oghli Strait in the east, Khazini water canal in the east and Gulf of Gorgan in the south.

Due to the rise in the Caspian Sea water level, Ashuradeh Island separated from Miyankaleh. It is 26 meters above the level of free waters and it has mild climatic conditions.

The island had over 1,000 residents and boasted of facilities such as police station, junior high school, shops, mosque and Husseiniyeh (a place for holding religious ceremonies).

People of the area bred livestock, were laborers and fishermen until the flood swamped the island in 1993 and all its inhabitants abandoned it.

Ashuradeh has been registered as a natural reserve and has a wide range of animal species. The Island and its wider area, Miankaleh Peninsula, are among Iranian wildlife sanctuaries and are categorized as one of Iran's most valued ecosystems.

The flora of the island include raspberry bushes and sour pomegranate trees. Animals like jackal, fox, rabbit, fish and partridge can be found there.

It is worth mentioning that the region accounts for 40 percent of Iranian caviar fishing.

Under Russian occupation in World War I, some hospitals, residences, fortresses, and church were constructed in the island. Through the passage of time, only one fort has remained and has been registered as national heritage.
