Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Tokyo is keen on further expansion of bilateral relations with Iran.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani who paid a two-day official visit to the East Asian country on Feb 12-13.

Abe said this year is the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, stressing that “I want to further develop relations between the two countries”.

Both officials agreed on a policy to strengthen traditional friendly relations.

The Japanese prime minister also reiterated Tokyo’s support for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, from which the United States have pulled out and reimposed anti-Tehran sanctions.

The US reimposition of sanctions against Iran has negatively affected economic relations between Tehran and Tokyo. However, Japan is among several countries which have been exempted from US sanctions and can buy Iran's oil.

Iran and Japan have ramped up efforts in recent years to boost bilateral ties in diverse political and economic fields.

Earlier on the day, Iranian parliament speaker held a meeting with the head of Japan-Iran parliamentary friendship group.

Larijani said the Iranian people have no negative view about the East Asian country and are willing to boost the ties.

Larijani said the bilateral relations between the two countries are based on cultural grounds.

“In the minds of the Iranian people, there is no negative point about the Japanese nation and they are willing to expand relations with your country,” he said.

However, some countries create problems affecting the relationship that need to be addressed, Larijani stated.

He said that the Japanese parliamentary group can definitely play an effective role in solving such problems.
