Iraq tells Pompeo it will maintain good relations with Iran
Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi affirmed his country’s commitment to pursuing “balanced” regional policies, including the maintenance of good relations with neighboring Iran.

Abdul-Mahdi made the remarks in a statement released by his office on Wednesday after a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who made an unscheduled visit to Baghdad, Anadolu Agency reported.

Pompeo canceled a trip to Berlin to meet Iraqi leaders during a four-hour stop in the Arab country.

He told the Iraqi leaders that the US did not "want anybody interfering in their country", and asked them to protect US troops in Iraq.

“I wanted to go to Baghdad to speak with the leadership there, to assure them that we stood ready to continue to ensure that Iraq is a sovereign, independent nation,” Pompeo told reporters en route to Baghdad.

Describing the US as an “important strategic partner for Iraq”, Abdul-Mahdi went on to assert that his country hoped to “maintain a policy of building bridges… with its friends and neighbors, including Iran.”

Baghdad, he said, hopes to build relations with regional and international capitals “based entirely on Iraq’s best interest.”

He added, “Iraq has returned to its basic role in the region, providing a venue for dialogue – not conflict.”
