German FM: EU convinced US maximum pressure won’t work on Iran
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Europe is convinced that Washington’s strategy of maximum pressure on Iran will not work.

Speaking to German newspaper ‘Passauer Neue Presse’ on Saturday, Maas criticized the US for its confrontational stance regarding the Iran nuclear deal, calling instead for ‘moderation’.

"That the Americans have unilaterally left the agreement [Iran nuclear deal] remains incomprehensible to us," he said adding that, “We, the Europeans are firmly convinced that a strategy of maximum pressure will not get us any further.

He stressed that the Europe will focus on dialogue.

"The danger is that even unpredicted events can lead to an escalatory spiral," Maas said in reference to the increasing tension between Iran and the US.

"There are a number of crises and conflicts in the region, ranging from Iraq to Syria to Yemen, but one of these conflicts could trigger a conflagration”, the German foreign minister warned.

Employing the policy of maximum pressure against Iran, Washington left the multilateral nuclear deal, reached between Iran and the six major powers – the US, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany – last year.

It then reinstated the sanctions that had been lifted under the accord, and began threatening the countries not abiding by the bans with “secondary sanctions.”

The US announced last month that it would not renew waivers that allowed Tehran’s eight largest customers to purchase its oil. The exemptions expired on May 1.

Washington has also threatened military action against Iran and has sent military reinforcements, including an aircraft carrier strike group, a squadron of B-52 bombers, and a battery of Patriot missiles, to the Middle East.
