Argentinian Gabriel Calderon was named as the new head coach of Persepolis, the Persian Gulf Pro League champion announced on Monday.

After weeks of speculation regarding the future of the Reds’ dugout, following Croatian Branko Ivankovic’s abrupt departure, – who left for Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli – the Argentine agreed to a one-year contract – with an option of a one-year extension – with Persepolis for an undisclosed fee.

The ex-Argentinian international is expected to attend a press conference today.

A former manager of Bahrain, Oman and La Liga’s Real Betis, Calderon will face a Herculean task in replacing Ivankovic who led the club to three consecutive league titles – including last season’s domestic double – and a 2018 AFC Champions League runner-up finish during his four-year spell in charge.

Calderon guided Saudi Arabia to the 2006 World Cup Finals – following an unbeaten campaign at the Asian qualifiers – but was sacked before the finals after a defeat against Iraq at the West Asian Games in December 2005.

The Argentine – a member of the national side which lost to West Germany in the 1990 World Cup final – also had successful stints at Suadi giants Al Ittihad and Al Hilal between 2008 and 2011, steering the former to the 2009 AFC Champions League final where his side suffered a 2-1 defeat in the final against South Korea’s Pohang Steelers.

Calderon was last in charge of the QSL side Qatar SC where he lost his job after seven defeats in first nine games of the 2017-2018 season.
